Eating Disorders

‘Eating disorders are a range of conditions that can affect someone physically, psychologically and socially. Over 725,000 men and women in the UK are affected by eating disorders.’ (Ref: B-eat 2016)

Eating disorders are serious and come under the category of mental illness, people develop eating disorders for a variety of reasons e.g. as a way of dealing with emotions which they are not able to articulate in another way or they may feel it is the only thing left that they can control. Anyone can develop an eating disorder irrespective of age or gender.

Types of eating disorders include:

  • Anorexia
  • Bulimia
  • Emotional overeating
  • Binge eating disorder
  • Disordered eating
  • EDNOS – Eating disorder otherwise not specified

Although eating disorders are very serious, they are treatable conditions and a full recovery is possible.
